FAQs

From 1st May 2026, the management, and day-to-day operations will cease at Golden Lane Sports & Fitness Centre.

When is the last day of operation?
The final day of operation at 30 April 2026. The centre will close from 8pm that day.

Is the leisure centre closing? Is the closure permanent?
Unfortunately, Golden Lane Sports and Fitness Centre will be closed from 1st May 2026 in agreement with the City of London, so that the local authority can commence its refurbishment plans. For further information please visit Golden Lane Sport and Fitness - City of London

What happens to my membership? Will I receive a refund for my prepaid membership?
For members whose payments are taken on the 1st of the month, your membership will be cancelled as of the 30th April 2026, and no further payments will be taken.

For members whose payments are taken on the 15th of the month, your direct debit was automatically adjusted by 50% (for the 15th April 2026 payment) to take into account the closure.

For those with annual memberships or future bookings post 30th April 2026, there are three options available:

Option 1– Section 75 claim

Section 75 is a UK consumer protection law which can apply to all defective purchases between £100 and £30,000. You may be able to chargeback membership payments with the Charity, subject to your payment method (credit card) and credit provider. Debit cards and bank transfers are not covered.

To make a Section 75 claim you will need to contact your credit provider and review the terms and conditions of your credit provider or payment service. They will typically request evidence.

Option 2 – Unsecured claim

If you are unable to secure a Section 75 claim as identified above, you can submit an unsecured claim in the Administration by completing a proof of debt form (attached).

We appreciate that this is an unfortunate position to be in, but I hope that the above options will allow you some form of recovery. If you have any queries, please contact fusion@swgroup.com.

Option 3 – City of London alternatives

A message from the City of London Corporation

We’re committed to the future of the Golden Lane Leisure Centre and are investing £10.4 million to refurbish it into a modern, high quality facility for the community to enjoy for years to come.

We know the temporary closure will be disappointing. That’s why our focus has been on securing strong local alternatives that serves the full range of needs in our community - right through to Golden Lane’s re opening in 2028.

During the closure, we've secured affordable local options so that:

  • Existing users can access alternative leisure centres within a 10 minute walk
  • User groups - including children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), and Young at Heart - will continue to receive a strong alternative offer

Below you’ll find what’s in place during the closure, plus what happens next. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we deliver these arrangements.

Leisure Centre Members - gym and swim access nearby (at no extra cost to users)

We’re pleased to confirm the City Corporation has secured an agreement with Islington GLL/Better for your Golden Lane membership to be taken up in their nearby facilities – aligned to your membership type. Both facilities are within a 10 minute walk:

Finsbury Leisure Centre, Norman Street, London EC1V 3PU
Ironmonger Row Baths, 1 Norman Street, London EC1V 3A

Your membership will not cost you more.

  • Finsbury leisure centre has a studio, squash courts, badminton and table tennis – plus a soft play area for younger kids.
  • Ironmonger Row Baths provides a gym, cardio machine and a 30-metre swimming pool.

We’ll share practical details shortly, including how to access the sites and how to book sessions.

Organised groups and classes

We want to make sure organised groups and classes continue smoothly. We’re working closely with providers to confirm the best possible alternative arrangements.

The updated programme will be published soon on our website.

Your Young at Heart fitness membership will transfer to Islington GLL. We have arranged alternative venues for specific activities:

Table Tennis, Line Dancing, Ballroom Dancing, Tai Chi, Short Mat Bowls will take place at City St George’s University.
